The
Museum of Contemporary Art of the Cusco Town Hall, the
only state institution in Peru specialized in the
field of modern plastic arts, was founded in 1995
thanks to the support of the Mayor of the city and the
donation of 100
works of local artists by the private collector Dr. Luis Rivera
Dávalos. In the present it owns more than 280 works by
distinguished local, Peruvian and forein artists. The earliest item is the oil painting by Remigia Mendoza "Vilcanota
River" (1897). The
Museum counts with two exhibition halls at the Municipal
Palace, one at San Bernardo chapel, as well as areas for
handicraft exhibitions in the
main patio of the Municipal Palace. Apart
from the permanent exhibition of the works of its
collection, the Museum recieves annualy more than 50
temporary , individual and joint, exhibitions of well-known national and foreign artists, such as: Salon of the National
and International Art events,
Latin American encounters of Visual Artists and others. Art
in Cusco is represented not only by ancient Inca and
Colonial heritage, it lives its modern life in the works of
contemporary artists. |
